Fire Plague (Neth (XI) 19th-25th, 4708 AR)

On Neth 22, a plume of smoke visible from anywhere in the vale emanated from the fey glade. When the heroes investigated, they found it burned down. On Neth 24, flame drakes arrived at the community of Fort Thorn and attacked its people.

Flame Drake Attacks

On Neth 24, a group of four flame drakes attacked Fort Thorn. These attacks came without warning and in the middle of the day. The heroes were away exploring at the time, but they returned when they saw smoke emanating from the Fort. According to the Fort's defenders, the drakes did not land at all. Instead, they flew overhead hundreds of feet off the ground and breathed fireballs onto the community. These attacks continued for a couple of minutes, at which point the drakes flew away.

This attack killed one of the townsfolk and set ablaze the visitors' barracks (where the heroes stayed) and the Fort's only shop, Wilderness Wares. According to the Fort's defenders the buildings were extinguished within minutes, but still suffered meaningful damage.

Sir Tolgrith was, of course, very concerned about these attacks and the inability of his soldiers to abate them. He ordered the heroes to find the drakes’ lair and to eliminate it as soon as possible. The lookouts reported seeing the drakes arrive from and return to the east. Until this problem was solved, all work on the path came to a halt.

Pointer's Rock

Pointer’s Rock was a tall spire of stone approximately 10 miles east of Fort Thorn. The main section of stone topped out in a flat plateau at a height of 80 feet, but a smaller pillar rose another 40 feet above the plateau. This gave the stone the appearance of a giant fist with the index finger extended into the sky — hence its name. The stone formation was completely uninhabited before Neth 25, when the heroes revisited it and discovered it had become the roost for the four flame drakes who attacked Fort Thorn.

Approaching the Spire. As the woods thinned, and rough, rocky hills began to dot the landscape, a tall stone monolith rose into the air, shaped like a gigantic stone fist with its index finger extended to the sky above. Known as Pointer’s Rock, there was a natural stone ramp winding up its surface.

Although the area around Pointer’s Rock was relatively rough, small stands of trees and the ever-present rose bushes surrounded it. Numerous bleached animal bones lay scattered all about this place. Now that the drakes had taken up residence, however, there were signs of fresh kills everywhere, including charred bits of meat and broken bones.

The ramp leading up Pointer’s Rock was relatively steep but stable and free of debris. Alternatively, heroes could attempt to scale the surface of the rock.
