Spiders (Neth (XI) 6th-11th 4708 AR)

On Neth 6th, large spiders attacked a work crew building the path through the forest. One of the workers was killed and another, a man by the name of Thallin, went missing. Sir Tolgrith was left with no choice but to halt construction until he dealt with the threat. He assigned the heroes this task at the first chance he got. The spiders approached from the forest north of the path and he suspected their lair was somewhere nearby.

The heroes easily discovered the spider woods by traveling north of the unfinished path. Within 1 mile of the den, the heroes located the heart of the problem.

Den of Webs. Dense sheets of webbing, with strands as thick as one's arm, blanketed the trees and bushes of this haunted part of the woods. In some places, the webs formed thick walls that blocked passage.

To reach the interior of the nest, the heroes had to cut and burn a hole through the outer walls. While this did not summon spiders to the area, it did alert them to the presence of outsiders. The walls of webbing were vulnerable to fire. The heroes used weapons to cut through the webbing but Gryxxa had her weapon stuck (requiring effort to pull it free). Destroying a section of webbing destroyed that entire wall. The trees were completely impassable, being a mix of dense tree branches and webs.

Spider Nest. Inside the ring of webs stood a tall oak tree covered in gigantic webs. The cocooned carcasses of numerous forest animals swayed from its branches. One human-sized cocoon danced and spun of its own accord, high above the ground.

A host of monstrous spiders called this area home, overseen by one particularly large specimen. When the heroes approached the central oak, the spiders moved out from nearby trees to attack, with their mother crawling over the central trunk.

When aware of the heroes' approach, the spiders hid before the heroes arrived, using webs for added concealment. The heroes were not surprised. The spiders attacked the nearest hero, using their web attacks first to entangle them. They fought to the death.

The spiders possessed little of value, but they did manage to catch and consume a bugbear who wandered into their woods. This bugbear carried a +1 frost morningstar and wore a masterwork suit of chainmail. The heroes found his body could by climbing through the tree.

The struggling bundle of webs in the tree 30 feet above the ground was in fact the missing worker, Thallin. This half-elf was very grateful for his rescue, but very weak from poison.
