Kytons

Outsider: An outsider is at least partially composed of the essence (but not necessarily the material) of some plane other than the Material Plane.

Outsiders have darkvision.

Unlike most living creatures, an outsider does not have a dual nature — its soul and body form one unit. When an outsider is slain, no soul is set loose. Spells that restore souls to their bodies, such as raise dead, reincarnate, and resurrection, don’t work on an outsider. A different magical effect, such as limited wish, wish, miracle, or true resurrection, is required to restore it to life. A native outsider can be raised, reincarnated, or resurrected just as other living creatures can be.

Outsiders breathe, but do not need to eat or sleep (although they can do so if they wish). Native outsiders breathe, eat, and sleep.

Evil: Evil creatures are usually outsiders native to the evil-aligned outer planes. Evil outsiders are also called fiends. Most evil creatures also have evil alignments; however, if their alignments change, they are still considered evil creatures. Any effect that depends on alignment affects an evil creature as if the creature has an evil alignment, no matter what its alignment actually is. The creature also suffers effects according to its actual alignment. An evil creature overcomes damage reduction as if its natural weapons and any weapons it wields are evil-aligned.

Extraplanar: Extraplanar is any creature when it is on a plane other than its native plane. A creature that travels the planes can gain or lose this subtype as it goes from plane to plane. Creatures not extraplanar are natives of the Material Plane, and they gain the extraplanar subtype if they leave the Material Plane. No creature has the extraplanar subtype when it is on a transitive plane, such as the Astral Plane, the Ethereal Plane, or the Plane of Shadow.

Kyton: Kytons are a race of lawful evil outsiders native to the Plane of Shadow who feed on fear and pain.

The extent of a kyton’s regeneration varies according to type, and can be neutralized by good weapons, good spells, and silver weapons.

They have immunity to cold.

All kytons have a gaze attack that may manipulate the perceptions of those who look upon them. The exact effects caused by a particular kyton’s unnerving gaze depend on the type of kyton. All kytons are immune to the unnerving gazes of other kytons. Unnerving gaze is always a mind-affecting fear effect.

Lawful: Lawful creatures are usually outsiders native to the lawfully aligned outer planes. Most lawful creatures also have lawful alignments; however, if their alignments change, they are still considered lawful creatures. Any effect that depends on alignment affects a lawful creature as if the creature had a lawful alignment, no matter what its alignment actually is. The creature also suffers effects according to its actual alignment. A lawful creature overcomes damage reduction as if its natural weapons and any weapons it wields are lawfully aligned.

Often classified among the ranks of the infernal and called chain devils by the uninitiated, the sadomasochistic kytons are not true devils. Although some are known to live in Hell, kytons exist outside of the hierarchies established by Asmodeus and his archdevils and can often be found on other planes, particularly on the Plane of Shadow. Many suggest that kytons were natives of Hell who existed there before the advent of devilkind, while others hypothesize they were later brought to the plane by some sadistic power. Regardless of their origins, kytons roam the planes in their lust to cause and receive suffering, seeking pain through violent abductions and sadistic debauches.

The chains that adorn a kyton grant it protection.

A kyton can control up to four chains, making the chains dance or move as it wishes. In addition, a kytoon can increase these chains’ length and cause them to sprout razor-edged barbs. These chains attack as effectively as the kyton itself. If a chain is in another creature’s possession, the creature can attempt to break the kyton’s power over that chain. If it does, the kyton cannot attempt to control that particular chain again for a day or until the chain leaves the creature’s possession. A kyton can climb chains it controls.

Just as there are numerous different species of demon and devil, rumor holds that different kinds of kytons dwell in their jangling cities in Hell and on the Plane of Shadow. These kytons often have spell-like abilities or hideous and unsettling special attacks along the themes of torture and pain. Rumor holds that the most powerful kytons are completely inhuman, and that these monsters are the true progenitors of the kytoon race — the other kytons but the result of unholy dalliances with their unfortunate victims.

A kyton can make its face resemble one of an opponent’s departed loved ones or bitter enemies. Those who fail to see through the ruse become shaken. This is a mind-affecting fear effect.

They have damage reduction overcome by silver or good weapons.

They have spell resistance.
